Frequently Asked Questions

What is a typical lesson at the Academy?

A typical weekly private lesson at the Academy is 30-60 minutes duration depending on the skill level of the student and involves a balance of practical and theory instruction. Some junior students often choose to share a half hour lesson with another student. During these shared lessons one student will complete their practical instruction while the other completes their theory. Our teachers are highly experienced and ensure that each child receives quality tuition during the lesson. Shared lessons are an opportunity to see what other students are learning or to perhaps learn some duets and learn through the use of music games whilst keeping costs down for parents assessing their child's commitment.

Can I come for a few lessons and see if I like it?

Port Macqarie Academy of Music operates up to 7 studio's at any one time and usually has limited vacancies. As a result we discourage 'one off' lessons and request a term commitment in order to give both the student and the teacher maximim opportunities to develop a rapor with each other and get used to a regular lesson and practise routine. A 'meet and greet' can be arranged if requested prior to the start of regular lessons.

Am I too old to learn a new instrument?

No you're never too old! Our staff have the experience and patience to teach people of any age and gain great satisfaction from teaching someone a skill they've always wanted to learn. We currently teach students aged from 2 years to 82 years!

Do I have to do examinations?

Our teachers work closely with each student to determine their commitment and whether they are capable and willing to undertake formal examinations. There is no pressure to do exams and all students are taught from a  syllabus so they can be assured they are learning from a recognised, structured  curriculm even if they do not complete examinations. We respect the fact that some students are content to learn for the sheer enjoyment of making music whilst others may wish to make a career of their music at a later date and will require certification.

How do I pay my fees and what if I'm away?

Fees are paid by the school term (generally 10 weeks) upfront at the first lesson. Fees can be paid in cash, cheque or online deposit only. Due to the busy studio timetable and our obligation to pay teacher's for their time, we don't give credit or makeup lessons when a student has been absent. Don't forget you can use your Creative Kids voucher toward music lessons as Port Macquarie Academy of Music is a government approved provider.
